Breaking the Promise... Fiery Way

Surprise, surprise... Last weekend, I was tidying my drawers in my painting room (balcony actually) when I found these guys, lying in one of the drawers gathering dust. I was this close to put them on eBay, cause you know, I am done with the CD army; but I thought what the hell... :)

This figures are the K'daai Fireborn from Forge World. When I first started collecting my Chaos Dwarf army, I converted mine from miniatures from different vendors. Forge World's k'daais have been around for quite some time now and it would have been a shame for me had I not have these in my army.

Painting these was pretty straightforward for me. Learning from my past mistakes where I did the flames backwards, this time I started with Yriel Yellow as a base and worked my way up to Blazing Orange and Mechrite Red. Finally, I touched the hot spots with a mixture of white and yellow. The metallic parts were done with Boltgun Metal base washed with Crimson wash for heating effect. Then I finished them with Boltgun and Mithril highlights. Mr. Lee wasn't impressed with the armor and told me that they need more contrast and offered me to use some blue wash on the armor. Also on the tips on the flames while I am at it. I'm intrigued to be honest and will give it a try soon.

Now some rant... In the Tamurkhan book, these guys don't have any armor save at all, just ward saves. I don't want to be "that guy" but come on, look at them. Other than the fact that they have no resemblance to anything chaos-dwarfy, do they look like they don't have any armor saves? In my eyes, this is just one of the many examples of how sloppy was the Legion of Azgorh army list created by Forge World guys. Sad... really sad...

Ok rant over, enjoy the photos...

I Bring Fire: More K'daais

Ta-daaa... Yeah, changed the looks of my blog a little. I hope you like it that way. I just thought it was time for a little change so, bear with this theme for some time... please...?

So anyways, back to business, which is the k'daais... I'm not exactly sure what's wrong with me, painting special stuff before even finishing the core infantries of the army; but here they are, three more k'daais.

As you know, even though the k'daais are in the The Legion of Azgorh army list which is presented in Tamurkhan book, there are no models released to represent them as of yet. Hence the chaos dwarf community accepted the challenge and got cracking, either by converting stuff or using alternative models for the task. Being as lazy as... umm... well, nothing comes to my mind to describe the laziness level I have, anyways, so I decided to take the latter route and searched for miniatures from different companies, which could be proxied as k'daais.

First, let me say that it was a very hard and painful task to look for these kind of miniatures. It is not easy to find the correct keywords for such a search. Then, even when you think you found a suitable miniature for your taste, you will notice that it lacks necessary scale information, which is kinda dumb in my opinion. I mean, it is not that hard to put a small ruler next to the model when taking the photos, right? Last, but not the least of your worries will be to see how the miniature looks painted. You can easily find yourself browsing through the galleries of Cool Mini or Not or a similar website for a glimpse of the end product. You've been warned...

OK, I guess I bitched enough. The three k'daai models here are from Reaper Miniatures. This US based company offers a wide variety of metal miniatures, so if you are a metal head like me, make sure to check their website whenever you need anything. The miniatures I bought from them are the Incarnation of Flame and Lesser Earth Elemental from Warlord line and Fire Elemental from Dark Heaven Legends line. As you can tell from my selections, I opted for fire and earth elemental figures to represent the k'daais: Perfect combination of Hashut's flames and the dwarves' affection for the earth and stone.

With these three are done, my k'daai regiment is four strong now and two more are waiting for me at home in blisters. I think six will be enough for my army for quite a while. I also prepared a kind of marker in the process. I intend to use it to remember the "blazing body" rule of the k'daais or an important spell i placed upon the enemy. It looks useful now. I just hope I don't forget them in my games. God, I hate that when that happens.

PS: Ran a search on Google about how to finish "as lazy as..." and here are a couple of alternatives: "as lazy as a preacher on Monday", "as lazy as a dog on a hot day", heh...

Red Bull Centaur

Red Bull Centaur
It seems I'm not ready to go back to painting infantry, so here's my first bull centaur: Red Bull style...

In Tamurkhan book, bull centaurs are classified as monstrous beasts, meaning they will sit on 50mm bases. That's quite different from their original base, which was a cavalry base (25x50mm). I was kinda worried about that at the start, since the base size is twice what it used to be, which might lead to awkward empty spaces on the base. Well, at the end, even though I didn't make any conversions or make any effort to add stuff on the base, I'm satisfied with the result.

The miniature is a vintage bull centaur model. Probably dating back to 2nd edition; but I'm not 100% sure. As I said before, I didn't make any conversions except the base itself; but i tried my best to do it justice when painting it. Credits are in order for my good buddy Mr. Lee for the Red Bull approach. Hope you like it...

FAQ and Errata for Tamurkhan is Available

Still haven't got a chance to read the Tamurkhan The Throne of Chaos book thoroughly except the Chaos Dwarf army list; but the guys at Forge World were quick enough to publish a FAQ & Errata. This three page document is intended to clarify some of the vague points on gaming aspects, like what weapon does a daemonsmith carry or can a K'daai destroyer be wounded always on natural 6s.

The document appears to be released due to huge demand from the chaos dwarfs community, since it only contains stuff about the Chaos Dwarf army list section and nothing more. If you are interested, it is available from Forge World website.

Onward Into Battle: First Game with the Chaos Dwarfs

Last month, I was visiting my good friend, Mr. Lee, to celebrate his birthday in İstanbul. We had the most pleasant weekend, spending all our time painting, drinking and playing games. He had a copy of Tamurkhan book by the way, so we also spent some time to explore it and exchange ideas about the tainted stunties.

So, since I had 9 miniatures ready and "da Book", we thought, hey, why don't we play a game with the Chaos Dwarfs. Minutes later, we were preparing our rosters. In that 1500pts game, I played the Chaos Dwarfs and Mr. Lee summoned his filthy goblin horde and we were ready.

Although my mate had more than enough terrain for Infinity, which we generally play, he had next to nothing to be used as fantasy terrain. Hence, we had to use pieces of paper for forests, a book for a hill, even a dreadnaught for an idol. That's what I call determination, heh...

So, we were rolling the dice once again, but this time, to see the chaos dwarfs in action. For the first time in 8th edition. If you want to see how they performed, please see the battle report on Mr. Lee's blog. Yes, I am doing this for him to have some visitors. Poor guy needs it :)

Starting a Chaos Dwarf Army

With the new Forge World book, Tamurkhan The Throne of Chaos is out now, I am one of the jumpers on the bandwagon to collect a Chaos Dwarf army.

The Tamurkhan book is a campaign book actually; but there is a Chaos Dwarf army list called The Legion of Azgorh, which is a sanctioned army list and can be used in tournaments and such. Encouraged by that, I went on to buy a couple boxes of Mantic Games's Abyssal Dwarfs army deal. This product line is essentially Mantic's regular dwarfs, plus some metal, "chaosy" bits to make them Abyssal Dwarfs. I didn't know that when I bought them and was very surprised to see Mantic, making me to convert their minitures; but you can only build & paint what's put before you, so, who cares... :)

From those boxes, I had 60 infantries, 20 ranged guys and 2 warmachines with 2 crew each. Not a big number actually, especially when you think that you can get almost twice this number of miniatures if you buy regular dwarfs. I think including metal bits took its toll there.

Anyways, that was a quick review of the Mantic miniatures. I will be posting what I do with them soon.
