Monster Madness Continues: Chaos Siege Giant

Monster Madness continues with yet another big boy. This time I have a Chaos Siege Giant.

Chaos Siege Giant is one of the new monsters advertised in Tamurkhan book. Placed in the rare slot, it is often overlooked among other choices like K'daai Destroyer and Hellcannon. I am yet to field this monster in a battle; but for the sake of completeness I had to have it :)

The model is a SPAWN action figure again, named Tormentor. The moment I saw it, I knew that this would make a great chaos giant model: It was huge, mutated and looked awesome. Since it is an action figure, it had moving parts. Once I got the figure, I fixed the positions of the joints with some glue and liquid green stuff, added the extra head and chose its weapons.

Painting this took a long time due to its huge size. First, I undercoated it all black and then basecoated the skin parts with Tallarn Flesh. These steps were done with airbrush. The rest, I painted with good old brushes, except the base where I used the airbrush extensively.

I can't give a step by step guide on how I painted this one; but I'd like to write some colors I used for a guideline. The leather parts are Vallejo's Red Leather, Brown Leather and Game Color Leather. For metallics, I used Vallejo's Natural Steel, highlighted with Mithril, then white. At first, I was a little worried that this color and the skins were too similar; but after the final highlights, I was happy with the results. I even tried a simple freehand on the back of the giant in the form of a tattoo. Probably the heads are arguing who will pay for that tattoo by now :)

After I finished painting, I checked the base size of Chaos Siege Giant. I was very surprised and worried when I saw that it is expected to be mounted on a 50x75mm base. So I went on and carved a rock formation out of foam to mount it on. I prepared it in a way that the higher the rocks, the larger the base, so I earned some more space on the base. Even now, it is expanding from the base as you can see from the photos.

Now, I need to read and learn the rules for it. I will also need a fallen giant template I guess. Enjoy the photos while I am busy with those. A comparison shot that will make you rub your eyes is included. The miniature in the comparison shot beside the giant is a Forgeworld's chaos dwarf infernal figure.

Terror from the Deep: Second Hellcannon

Here I am again, with yet another monstrosity. I have another hellcannon to show off; but this time, it is entirely different from how Games Workshop interpreted it.

Before I talk about the mini at hand, I have to say that I am not a fan of GW's current hellcannon sculpt. It looks too "machine". Hence, I looked for ideas on how to build a hellcannon which looks more "monster", less "machine". I found my answer in Ordo Fanaticus forum. The user JMGraham's beauty was too good to pass and I decided to undertake this project.

The base model here is a SPAWN action figure again. It is called GEMINI from Warriors of the Zodiac series. I am familiar with working on action figures lately. As you might remember, my second K'daai Destroyer was also built off of a SPAWN figure.

So, I started building this model by creating an effect that it is hoisting itself from inside the ground. The height of the model was crucial here due to the "firing point" of the monster. To make it right, I placed it side by side with an original hellcannon. Once I adjusted its height, I buried it into the ground by using putty and then surrounded the putty with balsa pieces. Finally, I applied -a lot of- Vallejo Black Lava for the lava surfaces, as well as the rabble on the rocky parts.

The painting has no real trick. Flesh is Tallarn foundation, Ogryn wash then HL with Tallarn again. The gems are done with Vallejo Golden Yellow and GW Chaos Black GW Orange base with a touch of white dot in the end, a very common gem painting recipe.

I painted the crew miniatures separately and placed them after that. There are many conversions on the crew miniatures and bits from various sources. As a last minute touch, I ransacked my gf's accessory box to find the chains and the bollards (?). They look OK, don't they?

In the end, I am very satisfied with the result to be honest. I am looking forward to displaying this piece in upcoming events and hopefully, I can bag a trophy or two with it. Who knows...

Enjoy.

Borderline Cheese: Second K'daai Destroyer

Hello! Is it me you're
looking for?
I assume everybody who plays with or against Forgeworld's chaos dwarfs have heard about the K'daai Destroyer by now. I already have a Destroyer in my army which is built and painted by Mr.Lee and running it in my lists with mixed success. These infamous monsters have made a remarkable entrance to "The Cheesiest List" since the release of the Legion of Azgorh army list. So the question is, if you have a cheese monster in your army list, why not make it two and guarantee the bad sportsmanship scores?

This 6" high miniature (!) is an action figure actually. It is called Tremor 3, from SPAWN Series. It is made of hard plastic and comes pre-painted; but of course it needed to be painted to suit for its new role. Being an action figure, the joints of the miniature were designed to be moved, so the first thing I did was to fix them in their places and fill the gaps with a mixture of putty and liquid green stuff. I can't say I managed to do it perfectly though since some of the  joints can still be seen unfortunately.

I took a leap of faith when basecoating the miniature and went with bright yellow. I call it a leap of faith because I never painted over yellow basecoat before and also I didn't know how will the action figure material will take the paint. Luckily for me it went OK and saved me from spending considerable amount of time and yellow paint. Once the basecoat is done I drybrushed my way to darker colors again:

- Vallejo Gold Yellow
- GW Blazing Orange
- GW Blood Red
- Vallejo Red (Bermellon)
- GW Mechrite Red (Foundation)
- 1:1 mixture of GW's Codex Grey and Chaos Black

When drybrushing, I made sure to drybrush lightly as the color darkened, not to overshadow the fiery layers underneath. After these steps, I applied a very light yellow wash to the miniature. I prepared the wash myself by diluting Vallejo's Pale Yellow with water. Once the wash was dry, I picked the "hottest" parts with Vallejo's White.

For the base, I used some balsa again. Also there is a small bit from Fenris Games with runes on it. There is also an island of rock between the legs of the monster. That was originally the stand of the other destroyer. Recycling FTW... Also, I should mention that there's Vallejo's Black Lava applied on the base to give it some texture.

So, there you have it, the second Destroyer. Now it is time for me to play a poor soul who is willing to play against an army with not one but two notorious Destroyers. I've also included a comparison shot of my two destroyers. The new one is HUUUUGE... :)

Enjoy the photos...
